Making Your Home Comfortable for the Holidays

The leaves are slowly changing.
The temperatures are cooling down
We’re losing a little more daylight each day
You find yourself pulling out your boots and flannel shirts from the back of the closet and choosing hot coffee over iced.
This must mean one thing: autumn is upon us
And with autumn comes the holiday season

Faster than you can say “candy corn”, Halloween will be here. Then we will be planning our Thanksgiving menu, preparing for out of town family members to arrive, and before you know it, that Christmas tree will be up in the front room as you wrap presents and place them neatly under your perfectly decorated tree.

Personally, this is one of my favorite times of the year. The food, the drinks, the weather, the decorations.

As delightful as the holidays are, they can also be overwhelming if you find yourself stressing over decorating your home. What color palette do you choose? What scented candles are you setting out? And exactly how many pumpkins are too many?

Well, there’s no need to stress. Changing your home into a cozy atmosphere for the holidays is easier than you think. Below, we’ve listed 5 ways you can make your home welcoming this holiday season.

1. Hang a themed wreath on your front door.

Make your home cozy and welcoming before even coming inside! A beautiful wreath is a great accent on any front door. One of the best things about wreaths is that there is a wreath for any occasion/holiday/season! A wreath on the door is a warm welcome to anyone who stops by.

2. Burn scented candles.

The sense of smell just may be one of the strongest of the 5 senses. The smell of lavender can make you feel calm, trash that needs to be taken out can make you feel nauseous, or maybe the smell of a chlorine pool takes you back to your childhood summer. Making your home smell good is a great way to make it comfortable. Apple cinnamon, clove, maple, or sandlewood are all great scents for autumn. Evergreen, fig, gingerbread, and firewood are perfect for winter. Light one of these candles in your front room and prepare to feel all the homey vibes.

3. Use seasonal throw pillows.

An effortless way to make your home ready for the holiday season is to use throw pillows. You can keep these on your couches or beds and even use outdoor pillows on your porch (to go along with your wreath)!

4. Use floral arrangements.

The best part of this one is you can choose to use fake flowers and reuse them over the years. Putting together floral arrangements around your house adds a sense of intentionality to your space. If you choose to use real flowers there are multiple benefits of having real flowers in your home such as cultivating certain moods, cleaning the air, and feeling more in touch with nature. Whether you choose real or fake flowers, the arrangement is sure to be a great conversation starter.

5. Cook/bake.

As I said above, the food is one of the best parts of the holiday season. Warm chili on the stove, cornbread in the oven, or a freshly baked pie on the countertop all provide a welcoming atmosphere. An added benefit of being in the kitchen is that you can use this as a way to spend time with your family. Invite your sister over or have your kids join you, put on some good music, and create a delicious meal that you get to enjoy together!

There you have it: 5 easy ways to transform your home for the holiday season.

In the month of September, here at Debi’s Crafts, we will be holding 2 different classes that can help you get ready for the holidays.

On September 13th, Maria will be hosting a cheesecake baking class over Zoom. This is a great opportunity for you to learn how to bake a delicious dessert for your family. Since it’s online, invite your out of town friends and family to bake with you and make it a family event!

Then, on September 15th, Debi will hold an online workshop making a Thanksgiving wreath for your front door. You can place this on your front door for an easy way to welcome your guests.

We hope you’ll join us for these workshops in preparing for the upcoming season!
